Magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes west of Vancouver Island, B.C.

A  6.4 Magnitude earthquake struck 289 km  west of Victoria, British Columbia   at 3:42 p.m. eastern time on Sept. 9, as reported by U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Centre .

Earthquakes Canada, part of Natural Resources Canada, reports the quake was 6.6 Magnitude and would have been felt lightly on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver.

The  depth of the quake was 23 km. The center pegged the earthquake’s parameters at 119 west-northwest of Ucluelet, 138 km west-southwest of Campbell River, 140 km south-southeast of Port Hardy and 289 km west-northwest of Victoria.

“A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami is not expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia or Alaska coast,” the earthquake centre reported. “No tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.”

The centre said some of these areas could experience non-damaging sea level changes. “At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.”
